German Red Wine and Chocolate Cake

  • 6 medium eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla sugar
  • 1 & 1/4 cups butter, unsalted & melted
  • 1 & 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder, heaping
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • pinch salt
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp cloves
  • 2/3 cup red wine
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)


  • Preheat oven to 180-degrees C (350-degrees F).
  • Grease and flour bundt cake pan.
  • In a medium bowl, sift and combine flour, cocoa powder, salt, cardamom powder, cinnamon powder, nutmeg, cloves and baking powder. Combine thoroughly. Set aside.
  • In another medium to large bowl, combine eggs, sugar and vanilla sugar. Use a hand mixer to combine.
  • Add melted butter and continue mixing.
  • Add the dry ingredients and the red wine alternately, in batches while mixing continuously.
  • Add chocolate chips. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to mix.
  • Pour cake mixture into greased and floured bundt cake pan.
  • Shake pan gently and place plan in the lower part of the oven for 55 to 60 mins.
  • Set aside to cool down.
  • Remove cake from pan and dust with powdered sugar.
  • Serve.
